(l to r) Dian Pinney, Donna Gabbei,
Loretta Larrabee and Leslie Schmidt

by Dian Pinney

On October 13-15 we went to the Underdown Camp Ground in Merrill, WI.

Leslie and Rachael Schmidt, Donna Gabbei, Dian Pinney and Loretta Larrabee camped for the weekend. Jerry and Allisa Heinrich from Mosinee came for the day on Saturday to ride.

Fun was had by all!! We cooked breakfast and supper on the fire. We rode on Saturday -- a very nice brisk 18+ miles. We had a few short cut problems but we all made it back to camp in one piece!!

Mule Makes Young Friends

Hal Burdsall and Gabby, his new Tennessee Walking Mule, made lots of young friends at the local FFA Farm Days in Black Earth on May 18. Each spring, the Wisconsin Heights High School FFA group displays and demonstrates a variety of farm animals for students in grades 1 - 3 from the area elementary schools. This is the second year that Hal and one of his mules and his mini donkey jack, Angelo, have participated in the event.

One of the young visitors helped explain to her classmates where a mule comes from:
It's when a horse mom marries a donkey dad and their babies are mules!

In Memory of Angel

by Dianna Peschel

I am sad to inform all of Angel’s friends and family that she has gone on to greener pastures. She died on March 16, 2006 due to a breeding accident. She will be greatly missed by all of us here at DeeKen Hill.

For those of you who don’t remember Angel, she was the feisty little white donkey who was horrible outside the show ring but as soon as she was in there she performed. She also would drag you over to anybody that she knew wanted to pet her. She was also the one you could stick anybody on and she would take care of them. She taught me to ride, fall, win and lose gracefully. She touched so many hearts and I hope we will never forget her.  Thanks for all the help throughout the years with her. We both appreciated it.

This year's state show will now be held June 17-18 (instead of June 3-4) but it will be at the same place, Heartland Stables in Custer (near Stevens Point). Spring Trail Ride
May 19-21, 2006

by Leslie Schmidt

The WDMS Spring Trail Ride was May 19-21 at Ukarydee Equestrian Campground in Arkdale, WI. The weather turned out to be beautiful for camping and riding. While we heard that some areas around us had rain on Saturday, we only had a few mild sprinkles in the late afternoon. Even after all the previous rain we had, the trails were great with very few wet areas.

For those of you who haven't been there lately, Ukarydee has really expanded. I was just there three weeks previous to the club ride and couldn't believe the size of the new area they put in during that time. We all had a great time sitting around the campfire and catching up with what has been going on after a long winter.      [6-8-06]  Back to Top

Loretta Lynn Trail Ride
September 4-9, 2006 - Hurricane Mills, Tennessee

The Trail Ride Gang in front of Loretta Lynn's Doll Museum
(l to r) Ron Nyhouse, Donna Gabbei, Dian Pinney, Matt Pinney,
Leslie Schmidt and Rachael Schmidt (John Jones must've taken the pic?)

by Leslie Schmidt

On the 1st of September, seven WDMS members loaded up and headed out for the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, TennesseeLeslie and Rachael Schmidt, Ron Nyhouse, Donna Gabbei, Matt and Dian Pinney and John Jones all arrived in Hurricane Mills on the afternoon of September 2nd. That gave us time to get ourselves and our mules/horses settled in before the 6 days of activities started.

Each day we were awakened by the sound of our camp host’s voice on the intercom at 6:00am. From that time on they kept us busy the rest of the day and evening. Each day we could choose from several all-day rides or half-day rides. There were also trails that we could ride on our own.

The group rides left every morning at 9:00 a.m. sharp. The scenery was great and the trails were challenging, to say the least. The Loretta Lynn website refers to the trails as "gently rolling hills and crossing crystal clear streams." I must have missed those trails; the ones I went on were hills that seemed straight up and down!! We learned quickly that we didn’t want to get in the line behind a really slow horse. If you had to go up these hills too slow the animals had a hard time keeping their footing with all the loose rock on the hills and would start to slide backward a bit. (Yikes.) We also learned to give the person ahead of us plenty of room before starting down one of these ”gently rolling hills” so they wouldn’t feel rushed as their horse/mule was sliding down the hill.

The first few hills I got butterflies as I looked down from the top but after a few times it didn’t seem quite so bad. I wasn’t sure how my 8-year-old daughter, Rachael, was going to react when she first saw the hill we had to go up and then again when we had to go down. She is usually a bit of a timid rider but now she was a real cowgirl and just did what she had to do and never complained. I rode in front of her and Ron rode behind her just in case . . . but everything went great. I’m really proud of how well she did. I even had a few people comment on what a good rider she was. We just smiled and acted like it was just another day of trail riding.

The ranch served three really good meals everyday. You never went hungry around there. Every afternoon and evening they had entertainment or something you could do. There was a horseless rodeo, a band, an “extreme trail challenge,”  plantation tours, and hay wagon rides. I think we all slept good every night from all the fresh air and activities.

On Saturday, September 9th we all packed up and headed home. There has already been some discussion about where we will be going for a trail riding vacation next year. This will be hard to top!

Great Celebration Mule & Donkey Show
July 6-8, 2006 - Shelbyville, Tennessee

by Sandy & Hal Burdsall

After hanging around mule and donkey people for 6 years, we decided this was the year to check out the Great Celebration Mule and Donkey Show in Shelbyville, Tennessee -- which is also the official home (since 1939) of the famous Tennessee Walking Horse Celebration. The Shelbyville show is the mule mecca of the East with Bishop Mule Days being the famous equivalent in the West.

This year was the 15th annual Celebration and a NASMA (North American Saddle Mule Association) “A” level show for mules as well as world champion classes by AGMA (American Gaited Mule Association). The NMDA (National Miniature Donkey Association) held their main national show on the grounds at the same time and the ACOSA (American Council of Spotted Asses) also had championship classes.

The show was 3 days (Thursday thru Saturday) of  FULL schedules (9:00 am til after 10:00 pm each day) in 2 huge venues . . . the Calsonic Arena (indoor) and the outdoor  Championship Arena. There were 277 total classes for mules and/or donkeys that ranged in size from 3 to 28 animals per class and 18 states were represented.

There were classes for Halter, Color, Pleasure (English and Western, gaited and regular), Driving (single, double and team), Jumping, Hunter, Hunter Hack, Ride/Drive, Costume, Game/Gymkhana, Obstacle, Weight Pulling, Reining, Ranch Riding, Style Racking, Speed Racking, Tennessee Walking Mules and more. And there were classes for different ages of animals – Junior (4 and under) or Senior (5 and over), different shoe characteristics – flat shod, lite shod and barefoot, different ages/abilities/gender of riders – Adult (19 & over), Youth (18 & under), Youth 13-18, Youth 10 & under, Amateur, Professional, Ladies, Gentlemen . . . you name it, there was a class for it!

Since we have gaited mules (2 Tennessee Walkers and 1 Foxtrotter), we were particularly interested in the gaited classes and finally learned the real difference among some of the gaits. Some of the more exciting gaited classes were the Style Racking and Speed Racking events where no break to canter was allowed but, oh-my-gosh, could those mules motor! A few gaited classes required a canter but most prohibited that gait, instead requiring the flat walk, running walk and rack. There were even gaited versions of Western/English Pleasure classes. In this part of the country, fans go a little nutty about their gaited animals and the gaited mule classes were no exception, drawing the biggest noise and cheering, especially for the racking (Speed or Style) classes.

A 3-day admission pass cost only $15 per person (and parking only $3/day with come & go privileges) so we watched classes day and night until we were nearly dizzy. It was always easy to find a great seat as the arenas are huge and most of the attendees are exhibitors and their groupies – not really very many “just spectators.” And when we needed a change of scenery, there were lots of vendors to visit (our own WDMS member Pat McNamara was there with TheMuleStore.com). There was always something to watch in the large barn areas as animals were groomed, exercised, displayed “for sale” and generally shown off. Our ears were particular tuned in to the even 4-beat gait noise that was common along the paved barn streets. It was in the barns that we found a couple more WDMS members, Robin and David Irlbeck of Cyderbay Farm in Mishicot, WI. They had 6 young minis there in the NMDA show.

There were food vendors on the Celebration grounds and lots of franchise fast food in Shelbyville. There aren’t too many motel rooms in Shelbyville but we booked early (February) and got a room about a mile away from the Celebration grounds. Some folks weren’t so lucky and had to drive the 40 miles to Murfreesboro, a much larger town, for a room.

We also enjoyed running into some old and some new friends, such as an acquaintance of Hal’s from one of his mule e-mail groups and the Kentucky trainer from whom he bought Gabby. The Kentucky folks had another “perfect gaited mule” for Hal but he did manage to keep his wallet in his pocket.

We were thoroughly entertained for the 3 days watching some of the finest looking and finest stepping mules and donkeys in the country. The quality of the training and competition was very high and it was extremely rare to see an animal misbehave. The weather was great, the facility was great, the animals were great and, as usual, the mule/donkey people were great. What more could we ask? We’ll certainly return to the Celebration Mule and Donkey Show in Shelbyville. Maybe next time with a mule . . . ??

The 16th Annual Great Celebration Mule and Donkey Show will be held July 12-14, 2007.

Canyon De Chelly Mule Trip
May 5-8, 2006 - Chinle, Arizona

by Ron Nyhouse

For a number of years I have been reading about different places I would like to go to and ride mules or donkeys. A couple years ago a friend (Moose) and I went to New Mexico and rode donkeys in the desert and mountains. I wanted my next trip to be the Canyon De Chelly Ride with mules. A friend (Ray) that lives nearby had vacation time and we decided this was the year to make the ride. The dates were May 5 - 8, 2006.

We flew to Albuquerque, New Mexico and rented a car to drive to Chinle,  Arizona where we met up with Ron-D-View Outfitters from Colorado. We got acquainted with our mules Friday morning and rode approximately 15 miles into Canyon De Chelly which is in Northeastern Arizona and in the heart of the Navajo Nation where we set up camp.

The formation of this canyon started about 230 million years ago. All along the canyon on the North side you can see stone dwellings that were built in the canyon walls. These dwellings were built by the Anasazi Indians starting around A.D. 200 until around A.D. 1300 when the Anasazi mysteriously abandoned their canyon homes. The Navajos found their way into the Canyon in the mid-1700's -- they respected and never lived in the dwellings built by the Anasazi Indians.

The trip was peaceful, beautiful and the weather was great. For four days we rode mules and enjoyed the Canyon (there were a few horses). We had a Navajo guide that explained the history
of the Canyon as we rode. We had a camp where we rode out from and where we slept and ate most of our meals. For 4 days there was no electricity, television, radio, or telephones. We didn't hear anyone complain about the price of gas, taxes or politics -- how much better can it get. The food was great, great company, the outfitter and his mules get an A+. It was a great trip and I would recommend it to anyone.

Now for the next trip, that will be to the Loretta Lynn Trail Ride in Tennessee the first week of September (Sept. 4-9). Next year maybe riding in the Badlands of South Dakota. Any suggestions ??

[E-mail Ron at nyhouse@frontiernet.net to offer your suggestions or ask Ron about his trips.]

2005 went out in style with a grand New Year's Eve party given by Norman and Cathy Duesterhoeft in honor of their daughter Natashia's marriage to Chris Peschel. The day started with a 2:00 pm wedding at the Lutheran church in Westfield. Natashia was radiant in a white gown trimmed in navy blue. She made an awesome sight walking down the aisle with her father Norm who wore his Army Captain dress blues uniform. All the proud parents looked very elegant and the wedding was beautiful. At 6:00 pm the New Year's Eve reception started at Pine Ridge Farms in Wautoma. The Duesterhoefts went all out to be sure that everything looked festive and the food was delicious. The DJ did a good job of keeping the guests entertained, involved and on the dance floor. At the stroke of midnight everyone was on the dance floor with their loved ones as the party came to an end. Chris and Natashia spent a  honeymoon week at Disney World in Florida. (I hear Natashia is an Eyore addict!)  We all wish the new Mr. & Mrs. Peschel a long, happy life together and a bright and prosperous future.
