With fond and fun memories we say a sad Good-Bye to a long time WDMS member and friend, Richard (Dick) Slizewski of Merrill, WI. Dick was 74 and passed away on September 23, 2009 after a long and hard battle with cancer. We will miss him.

Dick and his wife Dolores raised donkeys and dogs, have been long time members and supporters of WDMS and were very active in many club projects over the years, including chairing the WDMS participation at the Midwest Horse Fair for several years and avid participation in our State Show with their riding donkeys. Both Dick and Dolores served on the WDMS Board. See Dick & Dolores'  WDMS Member Page

Spring Trail Ride - 2009

by Dian Pinney

(L to R)  Leslie Schmidt, Walter Carlson, Walter's friend Kerby and Charles Staubs

The Spring Trail Ride was held May 16-17 at the Kettle Moraine State Forest - Southern Unit in Palmyra, WI. Attendees included Leslie & Rachael Schmidt, Rachael's friend Savannah, Charles & Annette Staubs, Walter Carlson and his friend Kerby, and Mathew & Dian Pinney and their new girls Shania & Paris on their first camping trip and trail ride.

The weather was windy on Saturday but Leslie, Charles, Walter and Kerby took a windy ride anyway. Saturday night we had a nice potluck, roasted marshmallows on the fire and made s'mores. On Sunday, Leslie, Dian, Paris and Shania rode with Walter and Kerby for a nice sunny trail ride.

Thanks to Leslie for arranging the ride and the Saturday potluck.

Youth Clinic To Precede State Show

by Leslie Schmidt

Youth Clinic Photos

Once again the Wisconsin State Horse Council has provided us with a generous sponsorship to be used towards an educational clinic for members of the WDMS. This clinic will be geared toward our youth members but is also open to other members who may need help in these areas.

The clinic will be at the State Show location at Heartland Stables on June 5 at 6:30 p.m. The clinic will have two parts. One will be on general grooming and the unique grooming techniques used for mules and donkeys. The second part of the clinic will be on showing, presenting and safely handling mules and donkeys. This will be a hands-on clinic so bring your mule or donkey if possible.

This clinic can only be offered to WDMS members, their children and grandchildren. Please RSVP if you know you will be bringing an attendee for the clinic. We hope to see you there for this exciting clinic!

For more details, information and to RSVP please contact Leslie Schmidt @ 608-296-4496 or e-mail theschmidthouse@verizon.net

Fall Trail Ride:  Sept 26-27

by Leslie Schmidt

The 2009 WDMS Fall Trail Ride was September 26-27 at Smith Rapids in Park Falls, WI. The weather wasn't looking good getting near the weekend but lucky for us it was way off. A few people got nervous about the way the weather was looking and unfortunately they canceled. We had rain Friday night. After that it turned into a beautiful weekend for riding. We had about 19 people show up. There were 5 donkeys and 8 mules along with the horses that came.

I was so bummed I didn't get to ride my new donkey. The computer in my truck picked that day to go out. Dian Pinney, Shania, Rachael and I had the truck and trailer hooked up and loaded so I pulled it out into the driveway to load 3 donkeys and a mule. We were all in the truck ready to go . . . and my truck never started again!! After the local mechanic came out and said we wouldn't be taking that truck anywhere we decided to throw what we could into my SUV and head up anyway.

Everyone had a great time and got in a nice ride Saturday. They ended the ride by c
oming back through the covered bridge by camp. Don & Corky Smith went up early and it sounds like they got some really nice rides in. After the Saturday ride we had our potluck meal with meat provided by the club and then enjoyed a great campfire at John and Sue Jazdzewski's campsite. Everyone had a great time.

I guess I'll have to wait until the Halloween ride at the End of The Trail Campground at Wild Cat for my new donkey Darla to make her riding day-beau and get some camping experience.

Mules Across The Border

by Sandy Burdsall

WDMS members Hal & Sandy Burdsall (Black Earth) and Blackie VandeWettering (Appleton) and their mules (Gabby, Tucker and Annie, respectively) spent the weekend of July 25-26 playing across the border at the Minnesota Donkey and Mule Club (MDMC) State Show. The show was held at the Olmstead County Fairgrounds in Rochester, MN and is one of many shows held by MDMC each summer.

Hal & Gabby won a few ribbons in halter, performance classes and games while Blackie & Annie took numerous ribbons in driving classes in addition to halter, performance and games. Sandy & Tucker enjoyed participating in some of the Sunday morning game classes (at their usual slo-mo pace). Hal & Sandy are also members of MDMC.

There are similarities and differences compared to our WDMS State Show but the weather was perfect for the 1 1/2 day outdoor show, the MN folks were most friendly and welcoming, the turnout was great and we all had a marvelous time!

Thanks for the hospitality MDMC!

Hal & Gabby took a blue ribbon in the Long Mane & Tail Breeds halter class (they were "in a class by themselves") Blackie & Annie were up against 8 others in the Mare Mule halter class (over 56", 3 yrs + older)

Both kids and adults compete in the Costume Class and have a blast! This adult won the 2009 Costume Class as a purple knight (or do you s'pose it was a Viking?!?) Some chores are the same at any show!
